Environmental Engineering



Environmental engineers use biology and chemistry to find solutions to our environmental problems. The work with air and water pollution control and try and find new ways to recycle and reuse.  They design water treatment plants, and investigate acid rain, global warming, and car emissions. They also sometimes work to protect wildlife.
The starting salary for an environmental engineer is around $45,310.
The average salary for an environmental engineer is around $66,480.
In 2008, there were 21,200 environmental engineers in the field. It is in the middle in population if compared to the other fields.

The environmental work field is expected to have a 30% growth in employment in the next 10 years. This is much faster than most other fields, probably due to our increasing environmental problems with the Earth.

A few environmental engineer societies are the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors and the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice.
                Graduates can start the licensing process by completing the examination, which is split into two parts.  Upon graduation the Fundamentals of Engineering exam can be taken. If passed, the student is considered an engineer in training. After a student has gained work experience in the field, the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam is taken to become an engineer.

The top three schools for environmental engineering is Stanford University, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
